What is CMMI?

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a set of globally recognised best practices that helps organizations build, measure and improve their capabilities. It began as a way for the U.S. Department of Defense to judge software contractors and has since grown to serve any industry.

For more than two decades, organizations around the world have used CMMI to turn goals into dependable, repeatable results. The model describes what good looks like and leaves the how to you, so it works comfortably alongside agile, DevOps and other methods.

What changed from V1.3 to V2.0

Performance first

Business goals connect directly to operations and to measures such as time, quality, budget and customer satisfaction.

Living best practices

An online platform keeps guidance current as business needs change.

Agile at scale

Direct guidance helps teams strengthen Scrum-based delivery with a performance focus.

Faster adoption

Online access and transition guidance lower the barrier to getting started.

The V2.0 product suite

  • Training and certification modular, learning-objective driven, virtual or in person.
  • Appraisal method more reliable and less costly to prepare for.
  • Model a simplified, clear path toward better performance.
  • Adoption guidance help for newcomers and for teams upgrading from V1.3.
  • Systems and tools an online home for the model and its resources.

Maturity levels explained

Maturity levels describe a staged path. Each level builds on the one before it by adding discipline and capability. Capability levels, in contrast, measure improvement in individual practice areas.

0

Incomplete

Work is ad hoc and uncertain; it may or may not be finished.

1

Initial

Work gets done, but reactively, and often late or over budget.

2

Managed

Projects are planned, carried out, measured and controlled.

3

Defined

Organization-wide standards guide projects, programs and portfolios.

4

Quantitatively Managed

Decisions are driven by data and measurable performance goals.

5

Optimizing

Continuous improvement is built in, enabling agility and innovation.

The CMMI V2.0 appraisal method

The appraisal method is defined by ISACA and is used to evaluate processes and rate organizational capability and performance. It looks at how well practices are implemented and whether they have become habit. Four appraisal types exist:

Benchmark

Covers the full organizational unit and model scope using a sample of projects. It demands real commitment of people and time, and the result is valid for three years.

Sustainment

Confirms that the practices behind an earlier benchmark are still alive and working.

Evaluation

An internal-use appraisal that helps you learn and plan without publishing results.

Action Plan Reappraisal

Verifies that the actions agreed after an earlier appraisal were completed.

Appraisal team members

An appraisal is carried out by a team of qualified members who help gather and judge evidence. Under the V2.0 participation policy, each member should:

  1. Have at least three years of experience in the type of work being appraised (one exception is allowed with a documented rationale).
  2. Have completed an official introduction or upgrade course, such as Foundations of Capability plus a view-specific course, or the V2.0 Upgrade Training.
  3. Hold an active Certified CMMI Associate (V2.0) credential, valid for three years from the exam date.

Publishing your results

ISACA's Published Appraisal Results System (PARS) lists the CMMI levels achieved by organizations that choose to share Benchmark or Sustainment results. Evaluation results are not published.

Publishing lets prospects and partners verify your achievement, and viewing others' results helps you choose suppliers and understand competitors.

Note: formal CMMI ratings are issued only through appraisers authorised by ISACA. SE Software Technologies prepares you for the process and coordinates with the authorised appraiser.
